I have been looking for somewhere to recycle some old electronic equipment and flourescent bulbs (tubes). I found that this can be done via McDowell County Dept. of Public Works (828.659.2521). These items can be dropped off at 3849 Route 226 South in Marion from 8 AM-3 PM. This is just south of the Transfer Station. (P.S. a note on waste disposal terminology: what we in Creston often refer to as the "Transfer Station" on Bat Cave road the County refers to as a "Convenience Center" [there are 7 in the county]. What we often refer to as "The Dump" on Route 226 the County refers to as the "Transfer Station". From there waste is hauled to a landfill in Caldwell County.)

Another place to ask questions about and learn about what is occurring in and around Black Mountain is a Facebook group called the Black Mountain Exchange.
John: we just tweaked the 'Trash' page to clarify terminology. Both the facility on Bat Cave Rd. and the road-facing facility on Rte. 226 in Marion are now properly described as Convenience Centers. The Transfer Station is described as being behind the Rte. 226 Convenience Center. Is the place that you say accepts electronics and flourescent bulbs yet another facility? I know that there is a big dumpster at the Transfer Station for electronics.
Brian & Debbie: At 3809 Route 226 there is a Convenience Center which will accept the usual household waste (plus waste oil and metal items) as well as the Transfer Station. While the Transfer Station does accept electronics there is a chance they may charge you a fee as you enter. Approximately 50 yards further south at 3849 Route 226 there is another Public Works facility (one of the signs will say "Bridge Maintenance") which will accept florescent bulbs (at least the tubular type), electronics and tires. The only fee I saw posted there was for dropping off tires (or "tyres" for the Brit in Debbie). Happy recycling!
